10th May – Remembrance of the book burning on 10 May 1933 (period 1998-2011)

Since 1998 globalART has developed a framework for Villa Aurora for an annual remembrance of the day of the book-burning on May 10, 1933 under the regime of the National Socialists. These events did not only commemorate this worst moment of German history, but also were meant to draw the attention to the still ongoing suppression of free thought in our times. Therefore, the concept of these events had concentrated more and more on the present: during the last few years writers had been invited to the events who had been Feuchtwanger Fellows at Villa Aurora, having themselves experienced censorship and persecution in their own countries. The events were organized in cooperation with the Atlantik-Brücke and the Literaturhaus Berlin.

CD Suerte Live in BerlinIn May 2006 the concert Suerte - based on spanish and arabic poetry from Andalusia in the 11th century - was performed at the House of World Cultures in Berlin with Abed Azrié as composer and singer and an oriental, a western and a spanish flamenco ensemble. The concert documented the musical and poetic richness of artistic encounters between cultures, pointing to the possibility of human solidarity and togetherness .

In cooperation with the House of World Cultures, the Atlantik-Brücke, the Institut Français and the Instituto Cervantes.
